All current Creighton undergraduates are eligible to join the Creighton University Mock Trial, and absolutely no experience in mock trial or law is necessary to do so. In fact, every year since its founding, Creighton University Mock Trial has accepted multiple new members with no previous mock trial experience.
If you’re interested in joining, send an email to our President Emily Peklo (firstname.lastname@example.org) or any of our other executive members to get more specific instructions for joining the team.
Generally, this will consist of three steps:
- Attend Skutt Shutdown at the start of the school year in the Skutt Ballroom and surrounding area and find our table.
- Attend one of our info meetings after shutdown. This meeting is designed to demonstrate the conduct of a typical trial and prepare you for tryouts later in the week.
- Tryout for Mock Trial. Tryout dates will be determined at the beginning of the school year and announced at Skutt Shutdown and informational meetings. This is an opportunity for you to show our Board your strengths in either the witness and/or attorney roles. ALL members are given the opportunity to compete. Tryouts are merely to place you on the appropriate team.
Once all of this is done, Congratulations! Welcome to the Team!
Tryouts will vary depending on whether or not you are trying out for a part as an attorney or a witness.
As an attorney, you will prepare a cross-examination for one of the character witnesses in the case, Ali Thomas, from either the perspective of the Plaintiff or the Defense, it does not matter. One of the Executive Board Members will act as the witness that you are cross examining.
As a witness, you will familiarize yourself with one of the character witness affidavits, Ali Thomas, and one of the Executive Board Members will cross-examine you. Approach your affidavit like an actor approaches a script. Feel free to create a character and become comfortable with the facts contained within your affidavit.
Understanding that some potential ‘Mockers’ are new, rusty, etc., tryouts are informal, but still try to best replicate a traditional Mock Trial setting. Interested ‘Mockers’ should sign-up for a tryout time at the first meeting in September. Your tryout should last no more than 10-15 minutes and the only people present in the room during your tryout are the moderator, Mr. McNary, the Blue Team Captain, and one other Executive Board Member. Remember this is more of a placement, than a tryout.
