Message from the President – Prayers for Ukraine, Ash Wednesday, Presidential Lecture Series

As if on cue, the warm weather forecasted for Omaha this week is a sure sign that we are halfway through the semester, with the return of spring recess just around the corner. It being midterm exam week, I know of a few great rocking chairs just outside of Creighton Hall that make for great study spots, especially when the weather is this nice and the sun is out. The chairs should be in-place when you return from break. It goes without saying, but good luck to each of our students as you complete your projects, papers, and exams. And for those traveling this week and next, to home or to other places near or far, I hope that your journey is safe.

I wanted to share a few noteworthy items happening this week at Creighton.

Prayer Service for Ukraine
Like many of you, I watch with hopeful optimism every day that the conflict in Ukraine finds some peaceful resolution. I shared last week, and will share again, that I remain deeply troubled by Russia’s decision to invade and am heartbroken at the loss of life. On Wednesday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m. on the steps of St. John’s, all are welcome to attend a prayer service for the people of Ukraine, that they may be held in the loving care and protection of our gracious God.

Ash Wednesday Services
That same day, St. John’s will be hosting four Ash Wednesday services at 7 a.m., noon, 5 p.m., and 9 p.m. Though we celebrate the beginning of Lent with heavy hearts and so much on our minds, it remains a blessed time to grow in our faith, compassion, and commitment to work for a more just world – a necessity now just as it has ever been.

With the Rev. Nicholas Santos, SJ, rector of the Jesuit community, I will preside over our weekly Tuesday Mass at 9 p.m. in St. John’s, and we are excited to conclude with cookies and hot chocolate, thereby capping-off Mardis Gras as we step into Lent the following day. Please join us.

Presidential Lecture Series Continues Tomorrow
Finally, the third of four Presidential Lecture Series events will take place on March 1 at 7 p.m. (CST), 6 p.m. (MST). This virtual, livestreamed event features Colson Whitehead, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and author of nine books of fiction and nonfiction, including The Underground Railroad, a New York Times bestseller recently adapted for Amazon Prime, and The Nickel Boys. Please note that preregistration is required to receive viewing link.

As always, thank you to this entire University community for being such a light in this world. Good luck this week, travel safe, and may God bless.

Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD
