Sustainability: Tell NPPD to Invest in Nebraska Wind!

Sierra Club

Imagine you have $1.5 billion to invest in energy. Do you spend it on clean and affordable Nebraska wind or dirty and costly Wyoming coal?

That’s the decision facing Nebraskans — and the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) appears to be pushing a risky and costly $1.5 billion bet on dirty coal. Investing more money in dirty coal sends our hard-earned money out of state, despite the fact that Nebraska has the 4th best wind resource in the country, but ranks only 25th in installed wind capacity, well behind all six states that border us.

Send a message to the Nebraska Public Power District urging them to invest in affordable, local wind energy!

Sustainability: Don’t Let Big Oil Melt the Rocky Mountains

Sierra Club

“Oil shale” is an unproven experimental technology that would heat land in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming to nearly 1,000 degrees to produce very small amounts of oil — cooking the climate, wasting scarce water resources, and destroying critical wildlife habitats along the way.

Tar sands is one of the most destructive forms of oil on the planet and has already been responsible for strip mining one of our last remaining intact ecosystems, endangering caribou herds, and creating waste ponds so large they can be seen from space. Together, oil shale and tar sands are unacceptable fuels that will cause further drought and climate disruption.

The Bureau of Land Management is considering dramatically reducing the amount of public land available for these dirty fuels. But Big Oil is fighting back, so we need to collect 20,000 comments by April 30th to show public support for the environment. We’ve beaten oil corporations before, and we can do it again.

Sustainability: Tell President Obama We Need Clean Energy, Not Tar Sands Oil

Last week, President Obama announced plans to fast-track the southern portion of the dirty Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, from Cushing, Oklahoma to Port Arthur, Texas. This wrongheaded decision to send the world’s dirtiest oil through America will do nothing to lower gas prices, and only helps the richest oil companies get richer.

President Obama was right to stop the pipeline’s northern Keystone XL portion, and he has vowed to double down on clean energy. These solutions — from green transportation to wind, solar, and new auto emissions standards — are the ones we need. We are ready to follow the president down this path.

Send a message to President Obama to express disappointment in his decision to complete the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline!

Sustainability: Tell the EPA Americans Want Industrial Carbon Protectors

Sierra Club

For the first time ever, our government is on the verge of proposing federal limits on industrial carbon pollution. Not only is carbon pollution linked to climate disruption, but also to significant health hazards like the smog that triggers asthma attacks. Right now, 158 million Americans live in counties with unacceptable air pollution levels. By showing the EPA that we want clean air, we can make sure they go the distance and put new protections in place.

Sustainability: Protect Giant Sequoia National Monument

Sierra Club

Giant Sequoia National Monument is home to half of all the giant sequoia trees left in the world. It serves as a vital wildlife habitat and is a source of enjoyment and recreation for thousands of visitors each year.

Giant sequoia trees are amongst the largest and oldest living things on earth but, shockingly, the Forest Service has continued to endorse logging in this national treasure in a misguided attempt at fire protection.

The battle to protect Giant Sequoia National Monument began over one hundred years ago when John Muir first won protection for many of the most spectacular giant sequoias. In April 2000, President Bill Clinton carried on Muir’s legacy by establishing Giant Sequoia National Monument. Now it is our turn to finish the job.

Send a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to protect Giant Sequoia National Monument!
