Economic Justice: A Suppression of Voting Rights

Center for People in Need

This month, the Nebraska Legislature will debate LB 239, a voter suppression bill that will make it harder for Nebraska seniors, youth, and those with low incomes or disabilities to vote. This bill will require a government issued identification to vote on election day. According to the Nebraska DMV, 10 to 20 percent of Nebraskans do not have an identification card with their current address on it. This bill purports to protect against voter impersonation, which both the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office and Sen. Charlie Janssen, the introducer of the bill, have admitted is not a problem in Nebraska. Such “voter ID” laws undermine our democracy by creating barriers to vote for seniors who do not have drivers licenses, students who move frequently and do not have identification with their most recent address, and people with low incomes who cannot afford to update their identification. Such laws also impose significant new costs and bureaucracy on counties and states without a good reason to do so.
