In Memoriam: Rev. Michael G. Morrison, S.J. (1937 – 2018)

The Creighton community still is in mourning after the passing of Michael G. Morrison, S.J., on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at St. Camillus in Wisconsin.  He was 81 years old. Father Morrison, the longest serving president in Creighton’s history, led Creighton University from 1981 to 2000.

The university underwent a lot of changes under Fr. Morrison: campus growth and new buildings, added programs and degree opportunities, athletics successes (inc. Creighton’s only CWS appearance), etc.  However, the first thing most people mention about Fr. Morrison was about how friendly and caring he was, and the memories usually include stories about him on the Mall – sitting on a stone wall, talking with students and faculty, a big smile on his face.  Father Morrison said it was the students of Creighton who energized him and kept him going during his 19-year tenure.

Fr. Morrison, as well as serving as President of Creighton, was also the “head football coach” in the early 1980s. We wrote about Creighton’s football program being undefeated since 1942 in a blog post from December 23, 2015. (Creighton Football: Undefeated Since 1942)

Rest in peace, Fr. Morrison.

Fr Morrison May 1991
